Matthew Cleary

Practice/Experience: 

 

Mr. Cleary is a business, transaction, and litigation lawyer with a particular emphasis on the regulated cannabis industry. He also has experience in intellectual property, corporate formation, and cryptocurrency law. Notably, Mr. Cleary co-authored a chapter in the book “The Law of Bitcoin,” published by iUniverse Publishing. Mr. Cleary represents cannabis industry (I-502) business clients on compliance, transactional, and intellectual property issues. Mr. Cleary represents both buyers and sellers in I-502 recreational marijuana license transactions including the merger of such businesses. Mr. Cleary has successfully represented a large number of clients through the I-502 licensing process with the State of Washington, and continues to advise their business practices after licensing. 

Prior to entering private practice, Mr. Cleary worked for the Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board as an enforcement officer.


Mr. Cleary is admitted before all Washington and Alaska state courts, and the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington.

Education/Background: 


Mr. Cleary received his J.D. from the University of Colorado Law School in 2014. He received his B.A., with Honors, from the State University of New York in 2011. Mr. Cleary is a multi-instrumentalist with advanced studies in guitar, as well as a singer-songwriter, composer, and amateur audio engineer.
